Laptop screen goes black after Windows XP Splash Screen(black screen with cursor)?

Try running scan disk and see if the computer can actually work the issue out with XP. There is a chance that if you run this option the computer will find that there is an error and then the screen will change to saying that it's fixing the error. After that the computer will shut down and attempt to start again. Because the black screen and the cursor is on the display, it's safe to say that the system works fine but there is something not loading to allow the computer to work. Another thing you can try is to get to the XP black screen with the mouse cursor, then do a control, alt, delete and bring up the task manager. You can then go to "New Task" and type in explorer.exe, hit enter and see if this loads the desktop. If none of these solutions work then take to a technician.
