Can a small school of neon tetras and a male betta get along in the same aquarium?

I am currently in the process of cycling my 20 gallon tank. I have two Neon Tetras in the tank. Once my tank completes the cycling process I want to eventually end up with 5 Neon Tetras. I am trying to think of a good "centerpiece" fish to add to the tank later and I was thinking about a Betta...preferably male if possible. But since this is my first tank I don't have much experience with fish and their natural personalities.
