Can a tank be too large for goldfish, in a practical sense?

I know no tank is ever too big for any fish, but say I have a really big aquarium/pond that has proper filtration, cycle, temperature, etc., Will the goldfish really swim all over the place if the only source of food is in one location at specific times of day (ie. where I would feed him). Curious if anyone actually has a really large pond and have goldfish. Do they actually travel around the entire pond, or stay rather close to the feedin?
