Seatbelts and airbags?

They use two completely separate deployment sensor systems. The airbags (supplemental restraint systems, to be politically correct) have to be armed through deceleration sensors, and sensors built into the crumple zone. The seat belt retractor has a little plumb bob built into it, and the crash force swings the plumb bob from vertical, locking the retractor.
